WMF World Cup 2022 in Kyiv cancelled

Dear WMF members,

We had an executive committee meeting today after learning about the military escalation in Ukraine. We regret to announce, on behalf of the leaders and main parties involved, that our best option is to cancel the 2022 WMF World Cup in Kyiv. We feel this is our only option due to the uncertainty of the situation in that region. We felt it was necessary to act quickly with this decision, so all parties could shift their focus to their immediate needs and the future.

We greatly appreciate and acknowledge all the efforts and contributions made by the Mayor of Kyiv Mr. Vitali Klitschko and his team, along with the Minifootball Federation of Ukraine, and there is no way anyone can repay the investments given before this circumstantial force majeure. We were looking forward to the WMF World Cup in Kyiv and hope to have another chance to fulfill our joint plans.

International work and cooperation may often be tricky to manage, and it is disappointing when political factors disrupt and jeopardize the positive things that sport brings to individuals, families, and societies.

We will inform you about the next steps after our executive committee meeting, which will be held next week.

We hope that the conflict in Ukraine does not develop further and that peace will prevail now and in the future.

Zorica Hofman
SECRETARY GENERAL
